The mission of this blog is to invoke conversation and thought that will challenge and sharpen all who participate for the glory of God. I intend on posting one or two times a week on various topics including, but not limited to Christ, His Church, and Reformed Theology.

Another Book List

Christ Centered Preaching (Dr. Bryan Chapell) - This was an excellent book on expository preaching. I can't really compare it to anything since it is the only book I have read on the topic but I found it to be engaging and helpful as I begin to embark on my Master of Divinity. Chapel does an excellent job of showing both the importance and practicality of preaching Christ throughout all the scriptures. He does this is a way that equips the reader with the knowledge that it is important to preach each individual text and its redemptive focus. It’s a good read!

God of Promise
(Michael S. Horton) - This book is more my cup of tea. It is the best book I have read on the topic of Covenant Theology. In it Horton demonstrates the importance of God's covenant promises at every moment and in all areas of life. Horton demonstrates the important roles of promise, fulfillment, eschatology, law, and many other topics in the Christian's faith and practice. I think most important Horton drives home the fact that the law is powerless to justify or sanctify. It shows our need, and and acts as a navigation system but produces nothing but death. Horton makes the analogy that as a sailboat needs wind to move so does the Christian need Christ and Him crucified to have any hope of traveling the stormy waters of life in a fallen world. This book is a very clear and pastoral look at the issues that attempt to undermine the gospel message today. Horton is very clear on the importance of Covenant promise, law, and fulfillment found only in Christ Jesus our Lord who died to sin that we might live to God through Him!

(No posts for a while, not that I post all that often, I am moving to St. Loius and Covenant Seminary. Praise God!)

Who Loves You?

"If the love of a father will not make a child delight in him, what will?"
- John Owen

This quote above is at the begining of Children of the Living God. I think it makes a good point that we need to think about more. If we as children delight in our fathers even when they show us love tainted with sin, how much more ought we delight in the love of God who adopted us as His children in love even before the foundations of the world? I have been thinking about this for a while now, and I pray God's people will grow in their recognition and thanksgiving that our covenant Lord adopted us as sons before He ever said "let there be light". It may not always be easy to delight in our circumstances, but if we are reminded daily through scripture and one another that God loves us and will complete the work He began then not only will we willingly do what He commands, but we will delight in doing the good works fro which he created us!
